Fireworks have been the default wedding finale for decades. But more and more UK couples are asking the same question: is there something better?
Whether it's venue restrictions, noise complaints, environmental concerns, or simply wanting something more personal and memorable, the search for firework alternatives is growing fast. Here's an honest guide to your options — and why one of them is pulling ahead of the rest.
Why Are Couples Moving Away from Fireworks?
It's not just one reason. It's usually several at once:
Venue bans. A huge number of UK wedding venues — particularly rural estates, farms, and coastal locations — no longer permit fireworks due to fire risk, neighbour complaints, or wildlife on the grounds.
The environmental impact. A typical display produces around 17 kg of CO₂ from 35 kg of gunpowder — equivalent to driving 25 miles — and scatters cardboard, plastic, and chemical residue across the surrounding landscape.

2. Cold Sparklers (Indoor Sparkler Machines)
A popular choice for barn and indoor venues, cold sparklers produce a fountain of sparks that are cool to the touch and produce minimal smoke. They look spectacular in photos and videos, but they're a short burst — typically 30–60 seconds — rather than a centrepiece show. Great as an accompaniment; not really a standalone finale.
3. Sky Lanterns
Romantic in concept, but increasingly problematic in practice. Many UK venues ban them due to fire risk, and they're environmentally damaging — the wire frames and paper end up in fields, hedgerows, and waterways. Worth mentioning only to say: think carefully before choosing these.
4. Laser Shows
Laser displays can be visually dramatic, but they require significant infrastructure, are largely fixed in position, and don't carry the same emotional or customisable quality as a drone show. Best suited to large commercial events rather than intimate weddings.
5. Live Music or Performance Finale
Never underestimate a great band or a surprise live performance as a send-off moment. It won't replace the visual spectacle of fireworks, but it creates atmosphere and energy in a different way. Works brilliantly alongside a drone show.
